LET US EXPLORE THE LESS-KNOWN WORLD OF THE BEAUTIFUL AQUATIC FRIEND - OTTERS. WORLD OTTER DAY - 29 MAY 2024

There are 13 extant species of otters in the world & can be found on most continents. Their typical habitats - Freshwater & Marine.

Do you know that the presence of otters indicates a healthy river. Simply put, they are a positive indicator of water quality.

Another interesting fact is that otters have the densest fur of any animal. The fur is water proof with millions of hairs per square inch & keeps them warm.

It's heartening to know that Otters are often hunted for this soft & light fur to make fashion & other clothing products.

Though it is hard to believe, it is true that in some countries, otters are illegally captured for social trends like taking selfies or to show that they are being kept for petting.

Don't be surprised to know that otters are skilled tool users :) They are seen cracking open clams and shellfish by placing a rock on their chest and hammering it with a paw.

Sea otters love to juggle! They float on their backs and juggle their prey in the water. Have you seen this ever?

Sea otters are bigger than river otters. Sea otter's tail is short & flat, whereas the river otter has a long & pointed tail. The gestation period is different in sea otters & river otters.

The life span of otter is around 10-15 years. But do you know, it is different for males & females? It is also different for Sea & river otter. Also, age differs in wild as against in captivity.

World Otter day is on last Wednesday of Month of May. This year,, it is on 29 May 2024. To celebrate this day, try to find more information about the otter named Rosa / Adaa & Etika.
